I have been sitting on the squeaky green leather sofa in Frank 'It's the way I tell 'em' Carson's front room for several hours now as he weaves in and out of anecdotes, indiscretions, corny catchphrases and shaggy-dog tales, does impressions of ducks, Pakistanis and Chinese men and jokes about paranoid schizophrenics, dwarves, black men, Muslims, the Irish, his pacemaker and his rather weary wife, Ruth.
