'I took LSD': Maureen Lipman's astonishing drug-taking confession
Synopsis:
She may be best known as the proud Jewish mother Beattie in the 1980s BT adverts.
But Maureen Lipman has revealed a much wilder streak behind this wholesome exterior.
She has confessed she took the hallucinogenic drug LSD during the 1960s to 'keep up' with her peers.
In an interview for a documentary Miss Lipman spoke about her experiences with drugs in her youth.
She said: 'I took it once and rather unpredictably ended up with somebody I shouldn't have.
'Funnily enough, I saw him the other day in a Notting Hill butchers.'
She added: 'In the 1960s, if you were, like me, green and from Hull, you had to keep up with your peer group in London.'
The 62-year-old actress made the shock confession on a programme due to be broadcast on December 1 on channel Five.
Miss Lipman, whose previous roles have included a portrayal of Joyce Grenfell and a part in the Roman Polanski film, The Pianist, admitted to smoking cannabis as a young actress in London.
She said: 'I never actually learnt to roll a joint. I guess it was that Jewish princess stuff.'
