Matt Hampson
Headline:
'I'll never stop loving life' says ex-England rugby player Matt Hampson who is now paralysed from the neck downwards
Synopsis:
Two months ago, a young Briton paralysed in a rugby accident ended his life in a Swiss suicide clinic. Here, in an interview moving beyond words, a fellow victim tells why he made a very different choice
A photograph captures Matt Hampson's proudest achievement. It shows him in full white England strip, rugby ball in hand, running with a dirty, sweating determination on his face. It sits on his mantelpiece, a daily reminder of the sport that he lives and breathes - but will never play again.
Because just months after this treasured photograph was taken, Matt's life lay in ruins. In a training session for the England Under-21s, a rugby scrum collapsed on top of him - changing his life in a heartbeat.
At the age of 20, he was left paralysed from the neck downwards, breathing through a ventilator and relying on a team of carers to bathe, feed and dress him.
