Hardeep Singh Kohli
Headline:
Is this the worst radio interview ever?
Synopsis:
Courtesy of Monkey at Media Guardian, this is writer and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli being interviewed about his new book, Indian Takeaway, on the Les "Hap-Les" Ross show on BBC WM.
It descends into a toe-curling farce, worthy of Alan Partridge at his worst. "Are you Asian British Scottish, or British Scottish Asian? It's very important to get them all in the right order these days isn't it?" asks Ross.
Some biog' info' from the BBC on the great interviewer Ross. We say, give the man a TV show...
Les Ross presents BBC WM's afternoon show between 1 and 4pm. Les's broadcasting career spans more than 30 years beginning in 1970 with the launch of BBC Birmingham where Leslie co-hosted the breakfast show. Born and raised in Birmingham, Les finished school with a host of GCEs, including Latin, a subject he always enjoyed. His first job with IBM was followed by a stint with the Birmingham Parks department.
es developed a strong interest in radio when, in 1965, he entered himself into a disc jockey competition organised by Mecca. Les won each round and was very surprised when he won the contest outright to be crowned Disc Jockey Of The Year beating the legendary Johnnie Walker.
The break he had waited for came in 1970 when he was appointed resident DJ for a new nightclub in Birmingham. Shortly after that in 1975 Les was invited to join Radio Tees as presenter of their breakfast show and was promptly poached by Birmingham's BRMB to host their breakfast show.
It was a hard decision for Les to make as he had a huge following at Radio Tees, but he was compelled to return to his home city. It was at BRMB that Les established himself as one of Birmingham's definitive radio personalities and built an audience beyond all expectations.
More recently, Les has presented the breakfast show on Saga FM where he replaced David Hamilton.
In December 2004, Les and his old colleague Ed Doolan from BBC WM became the first regional broadcasters to be inducted into the Radio Academy's Hall of Fame.
Les has also collected three Sony awards, a Top Breakfast Show award and the Variety Club Independent Radio Personality Of The Year award.
In 1996 Les was honoured with an MBE for services to broadcasting.
