You don't need the wiles of a computer hacker to see that Michael Dobbs may be on to something with his fictional prediction of a cyber-war in which one nation - in his scenario, China - reduces every other to economic rubble by tampering with the global electronic life-support systems.
He says the research for his latest thriller terrified him as he began to understand how easy it would be to bring a country to its knees.
"I happen to know it is a real threat," he says, not exactly tapping the side of his nose, but pausing effectively, mid-forkful. "Cyber-sabotage has spread to the highest levels. A war is going on out there, being fought very quietly but with huge intensity. And every one of us is in the firing line. ...
