Rob McGibbon meets...

ANDREW NEIL

Filmed By Yuri Krylov

Andrew Neil is a legend of British journalism. He was the editor of The Sunday Times for 11 years - from 1983 to 1994 – where he helped turn it into THE Sunday papers. While at the helm there, he even doubled up as launch chairman of Sky TV. He flitted to Fox TV in America briefly, but finally fell out with Rupert Murdoch after the publication of his autobiography 'Full Disclosure' in 1996.

Since then, Neil has continued to forge a formidable career that has spanned many media platforms. The billionaire Barclay twins, David and Frederick, made him the boss of their publishing company Press Holdings and he has overseen various high profile media ventures. Currently, he controls the influential political magazine The Spectator, as well as The Business, and art magazine Apollo, and a myriad of other international titles.

Outside the media village, Neil is best known as the forthright, yet forever jolly, presenter of two BBC political shows – The Daily Politics and This Week. Over the years, Neil has been relentlessly lampooned by Private Eye for his “Brillo Pad” hairstyle and apparent penchant for “Asian Babes”, but he has taken it all in good humour.

For this interview, I spoke with Neil in the basement boardroom of his empire in the heart of Westminster. As ever, he was on fine, energetic form and open to discuss all subjects, from the serious drama of British politics to the absurd fascination with his hairstyle and love life.
