Rob McGibbon meets...

JEFFREY ARCHER

Filmed By Yuri Krylov

Jeffrey Archer hardly needs an introduction. He has been one of the world’s bestselling authors for the past 30 years. His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not A Penny Less, arrived in 1976 and since then he has enjoyed what has been, by any measure, a stunning literary career, selling in the region of 125 million books. The exact details of his rise and bibliography can be found on his official website www.jeffreyarcher.co.uk

Archer’s latest novel, A Prisoner of Birth, is a fast-paced tale of false imprisonment and revenge and looks set to be his most successful of recent years. It went straight to No.1 in the Sunday Times bestsellers list and has hit the top spot in several other countries.

But it is the private life of the man they call the “Master Storyteller” that has more than matched any plot he has penned. Since 1986, Archer has been embroiled in a series of scandals that brought ignominy and an end to his political career. Most notably, he served two years in prison after being found guilty of perjury in July 2001. Since his release he has re-established himself as the “people’s” novelist and as a prolific charity auctioneer.

Archer was the first celebrity Rob McGibbon interviewed. That was back in early 1986 when McGibbon was a cub reporter on the Wimbledon News and Archer was the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party. Their paths crossed again in 2006 when Archer granted McGibbon a rare interview. It was a slightly tense, but honest and revealing encounter.

Somewhat surprisingly, Archer, now 67, welcomed McGibbon (42) back for this filmed interview at his famous Thames-side penthouse overlooking the Houses of Parliament. There, amidst a gallery of Old Masters, stunning sculptures, and a panoramic view of London, they discussed art, writing, money, politics, as well as mistakes and regrets - and God. It may be 22 years on, but they are still talking...
