Rob McGibbon meets...
WILL SELF
Filmed By Yuri Krylov
Will Self is an acclaimed novelist and a prolific journalist who writes for the London Evening Standard, The Independent and GQ magazine, as well as for a host of international titles. A broad cross-section of his journalistic work and a catalogue of his books can be viewed at his website.
Self is also widely known for appearing on various TV shows such as Shooting Stars and Have I Got News For You and, most memorably, for delivering particularly amusing and acerbic assertions as one of the UK’s leading “Grumpy Old Men.”
Self first came to prominence when he was infamously sacked by The Observer in 1997 for snorting heroin on John Major's campaign jet. He has since quit drugs and has been clean for more than eight years. Now 46, Self lives in south London with his second wife, Independent columnist Deborah Orr and their two children. He has two more children from his first marriage.
Rob McGibbon met Self for this interview at The Hospital private members club in Covent Garden. Here, they discussed his, ah, bloody brilliant new novel ‘The Butt’ and his life as a writer. Self also talked poignantly about his drug years and in moving detail about the John Major jet incident. On a lighter note, he also reveals why being lionised as a “Grumpy Old Man” makes him, well, positively grumpy.
